November 2007, Providence, RI…The Rhode Island B.A.S.S. Federation Nation will be sponsoring the Bassmaster CastingKids Program at the Providence Boat Show. “We are very excited to have this type of competition for young people to participate in at our show this year. The CastingKids Program is nationally known for promoting and encouraging young people to go fishing. It is the most successful youth fishing program in the country and we are thrilled to have it as part of the Providence Boat Show.” stated Nancy Piffard, Show Director. “No need to pre-register, just come to the show and try your luck”.
In 1991, BASS developed the Bassmaster CastingKids program, which is similar to the NFL punt, pass and kick events. However, in CastingKids the challenge is to flip, pitch and cast a hook less lure to a bullseye target. There are two age groups…7–10 and 11–14. There will be two areas at the show…a practice area and a competition area. Scoring is based on a points system so that the young angler with the most points wins. Each young angler aims for a target and the score he/she is given is based on where the lures lay to rest. Each individual will be judged and a score will be given at the time of participation. At the Providence Boat Show the competition will be open all four days. At the end of each day the two that scored the most points (one in each age group) will be announced as that day's winners. The 8 winners (two from each day of the show) will then proceed to the Rhode Island State Finals held in September 2008. At the State level, winning contenders from all over the state will compete and only two finalist from Rhode Island will be chosen. They will represent the state at the National Semifinals. From the National Semifinals 12 contenders will advance to the National Championship. The 12 contenders will compete to win a number of academic scholarships. Each year the program gives out a total of $21,000 in scholarships.
The Providence Boat Show runs Thursday, January 3 from Noon to 8 PM, Friday/Saturday from 10 AM to 8 PM and Sunday, January 6 from 10 AM to 5 PM. Adult tickets at the door are $12.00 and children 12 and under are FREE with an adult. Advance discount tickets are available on-line for only $10.00 so attendees save money as well as time by avoiding ticket lines! In addition, military personnel will receive half price tickets with a valid ID all four days at all Show entrances.
