Providence Boat Show Gives Back to the Community

02/17/2009

Providence, RI, February, 2009… Newport Exhibition Group, producers of the Providence Boat Show,

were pleased to present a contribution to the RI Community Food Bank, representing partial proceeds from opening day of the show.  Nancy Piffard, Show Director noted that each year we like to give back in someway to the community.  What better way than to help out our Rhode Island households that are at risk.  The RI Community Food Bank is a much needed organization in this state and we are more than happy to give them some assistance.

Michael Cerio, Communications Manager of the RI Community Food Bank was present to receive the check at the Boat Show on Sunday.  Michael stated, In the last year, the RI Community Food Bank distributed 8.3 million pounds of food to Rhode Islanders in need.  Currently, the RI Community Food Bank feeds more than 40,000 Rhode Islanders each month through a network of 285 certified member agency programs.  This reflects a 12% increase over last year.  According to the USDA, nearly 11% of RI households, representing 115,000 people, are at risk of going hungry.  One out of every three served by the Food Bank is a child under the age of 18.  According to the USDA, 17% of Rhode Islands children are at risk of going hungry this is the equivalent of 1 out of every 6.  We are very grateful that Nancy Piffard, Show Director of the Providence Boat Show has chosen us as their charity this year.  This money will go a long way.
